Ron Silver, an AFTRA member since 1971, died March 15 after a battle with esophageal cancer. He was 62.
His first television appearance came in 1974 on "The Mac Davis Show" and continued working steadily up until his death. He was nominated in 2002 for a primetime Emmy for his role as Bruno Gianelli, the brilliant campaign manager on "The West Wing."
Silver won a Tony Award in 1988 for his portrayal of a take-no-prisoners Hollywood producer in David Mamet’s “Speed the Plow.”
Silver was a co-founder of the Creative Coalition, a nonpartisan advocacy group for entertainers and also served as president of the Actor’s Equity Association.
In February 2008, Silver, who had a longstanding interest in governmental policy, launched "The Ron Silver Show," a political talk show on Sirius Satellite Radio. In 2005, Silver was nominated by President George W. Bush to the board of the United States Institute of Peace.
