Harry Kalas (1936-2009)

We Remember Harry Kalas

Posted April 13, 2009

A 38-year member of AFTRA and the voice of the Philadelphia Phillies, Harry Kalas died on April 13.

A Baseball Hall of Fame sportscaster, “Harry the K” Kalas’ smooth delivery and passionate play-by-play announcing brought ballpark fans and listeners together and to our feet.

Fan and players who heard Kalas’ signature call, "Swing... and a long drive, watch this baby, outta here!” knew the ball was flying over the outfield and headed for a home run.

“Sportscasting is a rare and time-treasured gift,” said AFTRA National President Roberta Reardon. “Harry perfected baseball sportcasting into a uniquely American art form. AFTRA members are saddened by his death, but we are proud to call him our brother as we recall his incomparable contributions to our craft, to our union, and to our national pastime.”

In addition to his work for the Phillies, Kalas announced games for the National Football League and performed narration and voiceover work for commercials and other entertainment media.
