Seattle AFTRA Members Turn Non-Union Calls Into Union Work!

Showing Your Professionalism With A Great Audition Can Make The Difference!

Recently, two veteran AFTRA Seattle Local members were able to turn jobs union by presenting the option of producing under an AFTRA contract and by submitting professional and effective auditions.

The first job was out-of-state and was found through the Web site Voice123.com. The posting indicated the producer would consider either union or non-union talent, and based on the audition submitted by our member, they opted to hire union under the AFTRA Non-Broadcast contract using a paymaster as the signatory. Our member says when the producer is hooked on the skill level demonstrated by union performers in the audition process, it gives the talent power to sell doing the job union.

Similarly, by providing a first class audition submission the second talented member convinced a local producer, who had posted for a non-union job, to also go union under the AFTRA Non-Broadcast contract. The producer was so very pleased with the performance and the talent and skill of the member that any additional cost was inconsequential in the long run. The final product was beyond their expectations. 

Both union actors had contacted the AFTRA Seattle office for information about rates and how to place the work under an AFTRA contract. Each felt confident they could handle the negotiations themselves, and felt they could build a rapport with the producer to enhance prospects for future union work.

The lesson here is simple, but effective: Even if a producer THINKS going non-union will save them money, when they see the skill and professionalism brought to the table by union talent, they CAN be convinced to “go union”. And they are often pleasantly surprised when they STILL save both time and money by requiring less studio time for retakes, and by receiving a higher quality finished product, which in turn translates into a more positive response to the message.
